Balmer Nelson Van Mersbergen CPA’s prepare income tax returns for all 50 states. We specialize in serving small closely-held businesses of all kinds and have been directly involved with hundreds of entrepreneurial start-up companies over the last twenty-three years. We also work in the areas of international taxation, retail, real estate, construction – involving cost segregation analysis, hedge funds and trading partnerships.
We have clients currently located in 43 states and several countries and have established alliances with several accounting firms in the US and abroad. Our growth and client loyalty have been based on consistent service and follow-through. |

Alan Balmer |
|
|
Alan Balmer is a partner in the Certified Public Accounting firm of Balmer Nelson Van Mersbergen, with roots that go back to 1979. Prior to working with Balmer Nelson Van Mersbergen, Alan worked in Washington DC with the international accounting firm of Laventhol and Horwath in both their tax and audit departments. Alan has an undergraduate accounting degree from the University of New Orleans and is a Certified Public Accountant, member of the Iowa Society of CPAs and a founding member of the Fairfield Entrepreneur’s Association. Alan has been a director and officer for several non-profit tax-exempt organizations.

John Nelson |
|
|
John Nelson joined the firm in 1988. Prior to working with Balmer Nelson Van Mersbergen, John spent eight years in public accounting, working with two regional CPA firms. John has twenty-six years of both tax and auditing experience, working with small business clients. John has an undergraduate accounting degree from the University of Northern Iowa and is a Certified Public Accountant, member of the Iowa Society of CPAs and also served on the city council and school board in Van Buren County.

Gail Van Mersbergen |
|
|
Gail Van Mersbergen joined the firm in 1997. Her specialties include tax return preparation for individual, corporate and tax-exempt organizations. Prior to joining the firm, Gail worked in the private sector of accounting. Gail has an undergraduate accounting degree from Truman State University, is a Certified Public Accountant, and is a member of the Iowa Society of CPAs. Gail is also a Certified Quickbooks Advisor, past president of the Southeast Chapter of the Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants and officer for several non-profit tax-exempt organizations.

LaVona Hollander |
|
|
LaVona Hollander is our office manager and the pleasant face and voice that will greet you upon your arrival or telephone call. She came to us in 2003 from Employee and Family Resources and has experience in a variety of fields. LaVona’s duties include reception, client correspondence, payroll processing for our firm and for many of our clients, financial statement and tax return assembly, correspondence with Federal and State taxing authorities, and bookkeeping.
